How Do Bloggers Make Money With Their Blogs?

This post tries to recognize some of the ways in which bloggers make money with their blogs.

1. Display Advertising

Most bloggers monetize their blog via advertising networks like Adsense. They display both text and banner ads. Payment is made on CPC (cost per click), CPM (cost per mile i.e cost per thousand impressions) and CPA (cost per action) basis.

2. Affiliate Earnings

Bloggers earn affiliate earnings by directly recommending products and services to their readers.

3. Promoting Own Products and Services

Some bloggers promote their own products and services on their blogs. An author promoting a new novel on his blog would be an example of this. Another example for this would be a corporate blog promoting the company's products and services.

4. Paid Reviews

Bloggers earn a regular income by coming up with paid reviews of different products and services on their blogs.

5. Paid Links

Paid links are also a form of advertising wherein bloggers are paid money to directly link to other websites and blogs.

Update: Note that paid links go against the Google Webmaster Guidelines. You are therefor advised not to accept money for creating links to other blogs or websites as this may lead to a Google penalty and all your search engine optimisation efforts may be undone.

6. Donations

Placing a "donate" link on their blog also seems to work well for some bloggers. If a blog provides content of great value then people might not be reluctant in donating a few dollars to the blog author.

7. Feed Ads

This is basically monetization of blog feeds. Adsense also used to offer feed monetization options - however the same is now retired.

These are some of the many ways in which bloggers earn money with their blogs.

The Great SMS Android Swindle

Cyber crime is nothing new but now smart phones have become premium targets for malicious criminals. They are attractive to cyber criminals because of the data that they contain, and the services they provide particularly the payment processing services. They also are often much less secure than computers and laptops.  In the last week Google removed over 22 apps from the android marketplace and suspended the developer accounts. Android users in Europe should be wary as some apps on the market are more sinister than they appear to be at first glance. These apps are capable of sending premium SMS messages without the mobile users being aware. The attack has been centered around European users, who do not realise that they may be charged upto $5 per SMS. The apps being developed and made available for download are being disguised as popular and authentic games or add-ons to already popular and trusted games,  often just by adding the word FREE, like Angry Birds FREE to dupe use
