The 1885 Benz Patent Motorwagen - the world's first practical car, was build by Karl Benz in the year 1885. With just 3 wheels, the Benz Patent Motorwagen was equipped with a single-cylinder 984cc engine and had a top speed of 8 Mph.
In the year 1902, the world's first Disc Brake was patented by Frederick William Lanchester. The drum brakes were introduced a year later in 1903.
In 1912 Cadillac implemented the 'Electric Starter Motor' that eliminated the need to crank-start motors - a move that actually made cars popular with women. The electric starter debuted in the 1912 Cadillac Touring Edition.
